Our travels finally ended with an evocative journey into the beyond.
We were At Sea with the Jamal Jackson Dance Company. In torn and
distressed sweats, this company of nine dancers pulsed and swayed with
an intensity that drew the audience into the storytelling of their
movement. Innovative choreography, Interesting angles, and
ever-changing groupings kept
us visually engaged, while the stage breathed with the underlying
rhythm. With motions evoking cutting, pushing, and the claustrophobic
feeling of being trapped, the company showed the rare and powerful
combination of technical proficiency coupled with emotion and
musicality. The combination of dance techniques- Modern, African, and
Hip- Hop –was enlightening
as each discipline worked together to create something new. The
movement also cleared a clean space in which to really listen to the
lyrics of
Nas and Outkast and see the stories of struggle and that feeling of
being
“at sea.”
- Jennifer Beth Swender, Gownus Wildlife review
Equally energizing was the Jamal Jackson Dance Company's
entertaining performance of joyous Afro-Caribbean dance.
- Lisa Jo Sagolla, Back Stage
The last act by the Jamal Jackson Dance Company was a brilliant
display of vivacious musical interpretation. Jackson choreographed
steps to an Angolan song in what was an inspiring and uplifting
performance.
- The Brooklyn Eagle
One of the more exciting offerings on Saturday’s program came from
Brooklyn. “Supplant,” choreographed by Jamal Jackson, blended West
African and modern dance in a collage of fury and fire. Dancers Tiffani
Harris, Meredith Moore, Asha Rhodes and Jackson brought intensity and
speed to their performances. When they all fell to the floor with a
resounding echo at work’s end the audience let out a collective breath
and immediately applauded.
